Aristotle (384–322 BCE) was a Greek philosopher and student of Plato who stunningly changed the course of Western philosophy. He has gone down in history as one of the greatest philosophers of all time. Cicero, the Roman statesman and philosopher, once called his writing style "a river of gold;" and his scope of thought and subsequent influence on the study of science, logic, philosophical discourse, and theology has led many to dub him "The Philosopher." Common Sense is the timeless classic that inspired the Thirteen Colonies to fight for and declare their independence from Great Britain in the summer of 1776. Written by famed political theorist Thomas Paine, this pamphlet boldly challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy to rule over the American colonists. By using plain language and a reasoned style, Paine chose to forego the philosophical and Latin references made popular by the Enlightenment era writers. As a result, Paine united average citizens and political leaders behind the central idea of independence and transformed the tenor of the colonists’ argument against the British. As the best-selling American title of all time, Common Sense has been eloquently described by historian Gordon S. Wood as "the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era." Thomas Paine (1737–1809) was an English-American political activist, philosopher, and revolutionary. As one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, he authored the most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution and inspired the colonists to declare independence from Great Britain in 1776. His ideas reflected Enlightenment-era rhetoric of transnational human rights and the separation of church and state. He has been called a corset-maker by trade, a journalist by profession, and a propagandist by inclination.

Virginia Woolf Classic Collection brings together eight of the most influential works from one of the foremost literary innovators of the 20th century. This essential anthology includes The Voyage Out, Night and Day, Jacob’s Room, Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, Orlando, The Common Reader: First Series, and A Room of One’s Own. From groundbreaking novels that pioneered the stream-of-consciousness technique to essays that redefined feminist criticism, Woolf’s writing continues to resonate with readers today for its intellectual depth, poetic beauty, and emotional precision. Across these pages, Woolf examines the shifting roles of women, the fragmentation of identity, and the quiet struggles of ordinary lives. Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse stand as masterworks of psychological realism, while Orlando and A Room of One’s Own explore gender, art, and autonomy with bold experimentation. In Jacob’s Room, she dismantles traditional narrative form, and in The Common Reader, she offers incisive reflections on literature itself. Each work in this collection showcases Woolf’s ability to observe the world with nuance, compassion, and profound insight. Whether you are a long-time admirer or a curious newcomer, this collection offers a comprehensive entry into Woolf’s literary universe. It reveals a writer who was not only a stylistic pioneer but also a fierce critic of societal norms. Rich in imagination, intellect, and inner truth, the Virginia Woolf Classic Collection is an indispensable addition to any serious reader’s library. Hope for a Better World! In these turbulent times when wars, religious strife, stifling bureaucracy, and urban decay threaten our very humanity, reducing us to social statistics, a fresh approach to the creation of a truly viable society is desperately needed. In this intellectual tour de force J. Donald Walters analyzes with deep insight the views expressed by many of the great thinkers in the West, including Plato, Copernicus, Machiavelli, Malthus, Adam Smith, Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, and Sigmund Freud. He studies their conceptions and misconceptions about the individual’s relation to himself and to society. He shows where their influence has proved adverse, then offers deeply considered, fresh alternatives. Walters urges the reader to resist the hypnosis of “intellectual authority.” Seek the key to a happy and fulfilled life, he says, in personal integrity. In his last chapter he draws on his own experience in developing cooperative communities. He describes how they can encourage a commonsense way of life, deepen human relationships, and inspire people to fulfill their own higher potentials. Hope for a Better World! offers compelling solutions to many of the challenges that face humanity today. Indeed, it succeeds—originally and excitingly—in offering real hope for a better world.Contents Preface 1. The Utopian Dream 2. Copernicus: Center, Anyone? 3. Machiavelli and Social Governance 4. Ask First: Will It Work? 5. Living Things Begin Small 6. Adam Smith and the Principle of Laissez Faire 7. Communities and Social Responsibility 8. Darwinian Evolution and Consciousness 9.
