1984-2024 : quarante années après sa première sollicitation au pied levé, la Côte d’Ivoire aura eu cette fois dix ans pour organiser une Coupe d’Afrique des Nations (CAN) exceptionnelle. Comme en 1984, après une victoire lors du match d’ouverture, l’équipe de Côte d’Ivoire a dû concéder une courte défaite contre le Nigeria et, contre toute attente, subir une déculottée lors de son opposition à la Guinée Équatoriale. Cette défaite a conduit à la démission du coach principal des Éléphants, Jean-Louis Gasset, remplacé par son adjoint Emerse Faé.Sauvé in extremis de l’élimination grâce à une victoire du Maroc, l’équipe a ensuite subi une véritable métamorphose. Elle a éliminé tour à tour le Sénégal, champion en titre, le Mali en jouant à dix contre onze, la RDC, puis le Nigeria en finale. Situations rocambolesques, suspenses intenables, tout y est passé. Mais surtout, la prophétie d’un jeune pasteur ivoirien s’était accomplie envers et contre tout !

In 1905 the team changed its name to the Washington Nationals. However, fans and newspapers persisted in using the "Senators" nickname, and over time the use of "Nationals" faded and "Senators" reemerged as the team's official name.In their first nine seasons the Senators finished last four times and didn't climb above sixth place until 1912. The major catalysts in their rise were the ascendance to greatness of Walter Johnson, who emerged in 1910 as the American League's best pitcher, and the hiring of Clark Griffith as manager in 1912. Griffith pioneered in the use of relief pitchers and in signing Caribbean talent. Although the team's new respectability faded, the 1924 hiring of twenty seven-year-old Bucky Harris as player-manager brought instant results, with a surprise World Series Championship in Harris's first season at the helm. The club repeated as AL champions in 1925 and its best season came in 1933, when it captured the AL title with a team record 99-53 mark. The Senators had only four more winning seasons over the next twenty six years.Povich's unique insight as a Washington Post sportswriter led to thoughtful advice and comfort for the long-suffering Senators fans. Legends like Walter Johnson, Gabby Street, Bucky Harris, Roger Peckinpaugh, Sam Rice, Firpo Marberry, Joe Cronin, and Leon "Goose" Goslin fill these pages, and their colorful exploits are woven into the fabric of each season's story. In my 2004 book, Turbulent Skies, I wrote, “Maybe someday someone will write about the incredible actions of the flight crews on the morning of September 11, 2001.” This wish began to manifest in the 10th year after 9/11 when I had an overwhelming sensation that I should undertake this quest myself. In my first year of writing, as I researched and wrote, my body would chill, and I would cry. Once an article was finished, I could hardly get up out of my chair. I truly felt like I was on the planes with the crews. I knew if I was to continue, I had to control all that emotion. The book’s focus initially was on the flight crews. But as I wrote, it became so much more. The reader will learn how the air traffic controllers cleared the skies, how Canada responded by handling all the incoming international flights, and how the failures of the FAA, the FBI, the CIA, and the airlines allowed this attack to take place. I realized that September 11th could have been even more disastrous had it not been for the actions of those brave crew members and little miracles that occurred that day. I also realized how it might have been prevented if the crews had been properly trained and informed about the threat they were facing. The book further examines how political forces changed the priorities for counter terrorism, and also impeded the examination of how the attacks could happen. These political forces were challenged by four New Jersey widows who got the 9/11 hearings approved. Finally, this book examines the aftermath of the attack, and how it forever changed the airline profession and added significant restrictions on traveling public.

En effet, tout le monde connaît les Jeux olympiques et leurs anneaux entrelacés, mais peu savent comment ils sont gouvernés et médiatisés, quels sont leurs revenus, quels arrangements permettent leur déroulement, quels biens et revenus ils génèrent. Mais les Jeux ne sont pas qu'un produit médiatique ou commercial. On peut les considérer comme un commun partagé par une vaste communauté d'athlètes, de médias, de supporters, de sponsors guidés par la Charte olympique, ainsi qu'une certaine idée du sport. Cette communauté mérite une nouvelle gouvernance plus collaborative et plus démocratique qui est envisagée dans cet ouvrage. Au moment où Paris accueille les Jeux olympiques d'été de 2024, il est temps de réfléchir à comment cette communauté pourra être gouvernée à l'avenir pour se perpétuer entre un commercialisme exacerbé et une étatisation sournoise.
