A Sea-Dog of Devon is a historical adventure novel by R.A.J. Walling, best known for his detective fiction. In this departure from his usual genre, Walling turns his attention to the swashbuckling world of Elizabethan England, crafting a richly detailed tale of maritime bravery, loyalty, and peril on the high seas. Set against the backdrop of England’s rising naval power in the 16th century, the novel follows the daring exploits of a Devon-born sailor whose courage and cunning earn him both admiration and enemies. The protagonist, modeled in part on real-life figures such as Sir Francis Drake, navigates a treacherous world of privateering, espionage, and political intrigue, all while remaining fiercely loyal to his homeland. Walling brings historical color to life with vivid descriptions of sea battles, bustling ports, and courtly politics. His knowledge of Devonshire’s maritime heritage enriches the setting, making it not only a tale of adventure but also a love letter to the seafaring tradition of the English West Country. While the novel has all the ingredients of classic nautical fiction—gallant heroes, ruthless villains, and dangerous voyages—it is also a story about identity, honor, and the cost of ambition. A Sea-Dog of Devon is a stirring read for fans of historical fiction and naval adventures. With its blend of action, history, and character-driven storytelling, it offers a compelling journey into one of the most exciting periods in England’s past.

This essential anthology includes The Voyage Out, Night and Day, Jacob’s Room, Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, Orlando, The Common Reader: First Series, and A Room of One’s Own. From groundbreaking novels that pioneered the stream-of-consciousness technique to essays that redefined feminist criticism, Woolf’s writing continues to resonate with readers today for its intellectual depth, poetic beauty, and emotional precision. This beautifully illustrated edition brings together some of the finest works by Vernon Loder, a master craftsman of Golden Age detective fiction. With a talent for intricate plots, sharp dialogue, and atmospheric settings, Loder's mysteries remain a compelling experience for readers who enjoy clever puzzles wrapped in polished prose. In Between Twelve and One, a mysterious death during the midnight hours sets the stage for a suspenseful investigation full of secrets and twists. The Vase Mystery offers an elegant country house crime where a seemingly minor object hides a deadly motive. And in The Mystery at Stowe, a weekend gathering turns fatal, revealing buried tensions and hidden identities behind a façade of gentility. Loder’s recurring sleuth, Inspector Devenish, brings methodical brilliance and calm insight to each case, navigating lies, red herrings, and subtle psychological games. Whether set in sleepy villages or London’s busy streets, the crimes are always sophisticated, and the resolutions deeply satisfying. This collection is not only a tribute to one of the underappreciated talents of the 1920s and '30s, but also a treasure trove for fans of classic British mysteries. With newly commissioned illustrations that evoke the moody charm of interwar England, The Classic Collection of Vernon Loder invites readers into a world where manners conceal malice—and no detail is too small to matter. A perfect companion for admirers of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Freeman Wills Crofts. Contents: Between Twelve and One The Vase Mystery The Mystery at Stowe The Shop Window Murders
