This book explores the profound impact of sport on community building, personal growth, and social cohesion. It delves into nostalgic memories of informal sport, the integration of sport management in academia, and the powerful sense of unity fostered through informal and formal sporting events and local traditions. The text builds from Warner and Dixon’s Sport and Sense of Community theory while emphasizing the importance of having a common interest, people-focused administration, and creating leadership opportunities within sport organizations. It also highlights the critical role of social spaces, both physical and virtual, and equitable decision-making in fostering connections and psychological well-being. The author then underscores the necessity of the Sense of Community in Sport (SCS) scale, which developed from this theory. This tool can be utilized to gauge, measure, analyze, and then adopt the scale findings to enhance community dynamics in sport and recreation settings. The author argues that sport managers must understand and implement the strategies outlined to build strong, inclusive communities, especially in the context of contemporary challenges like the loneliness epidemic and mental health crisis across the globe. Ultimately, through well-managed sport and acknowledgment of a shared responsibility, sport can be a solution to addressing the innate desire to belong to a healthy and supportive community. Warner provides a well-defined path and plan for sport managers to lead the way in creating a better together society.

Camping or backpacking in winter is appealing for many who enjoy the serenity of wilderness settings without the crowds and bustle of the summer season. But as rewarding as they can be, these outings require special preparation and a different set of skills than are necessary at other times of the year. Snowfall can quickly cover one''s tracks and make orientation difficult. Hypothermia is insidious, and rapidly changing weather conditions can become treacherous, even life-threatening.In addition to those who are exploring the outdoors recreationally, there are also those who find themselves in unexpected winter survival situations. Each year, people become stranded in wilderness areas, and in most cases they are not equipped to face the challenge of spending an indefinite amount of time outside. Without sufficient gear or knowledge of how to improvise without it, injury or death is often the result. The development of some basic skills, however, can help avert such unfortunate outcomes. As the founder of the renowned nature awareness program Primitive Pursuits, Dave Hall has been practicing survival skills for more than twenty years and has amassed a comprehensive understanding of winter survival. By refining these skills, Dave has reached a point of understanding that is without peer. Through detailed explanations, illustrations, and personal anecdotes, Winter in the Wilderness imparts Dave''s knowledge to readers, who will learn to meet their most basic needs: making fire, creating shelter, obtaining safe drinking water, navigating terrain, and procuring sustenance. Winter in the Wilderness is a handbook for those who want to explore cold-weather camping and those who might find themselves in need of this critical information during an unexpected winter''s night out. Whether used for pleasure or for survival, Winter in the Wilderness emphasizes the benefits of enriching and deepening our connection with the outdoors.

Hockey is a game where team rivalries are literally sealed with blood into the ice. No other major sport has fans going into the penalty box to fight the players or players going over the boards to fight the fans. Hockey has been known to see team mascots unwittingly cheat death during pre-game entertainment and players escape death mid-action. From benches lined with more coaches than players by game's end to lifetime-ban-inducing penalties worthy of assault charges, this international sport has seen the most bizarre - and often violent - action a broadcaster could only hope to describe. The Voices of Hockey boasts 65 NHL play-by-play broadcasters, past and present, sharing the game's most pinnacle moments of the past 60 plus years. From the Broad Street Bullies to the Bruise Brothers; the great one to the great eight; from flying octopi, catfish, and plastic rats to National Anthem interrupting shouts, these 65 storytellers encapsulate the greatest moments the only sport deserving of the nickname "the fastest game on earth” has to offer. Kirk McKnight is a published American author specializing in sports journalism with an emphasis on broadcasting. He has written three books featuring over 130 play-by-play broadcasters, past and present, for both hockey and baseball. McKnight’s other published books include The Voices of Baseball: The Game’s Greatest Broadcasters Reflect on America’s Pastime and Batting Clean: Why Dale Murphy Belongs in Baseball’s Hall of Fame. Currently serving as editor for The Wahkiakum County Eagle, McKnight lives in Cathlamet, Washington, with his wife, Collette and their child, Adaira.

In "Scouting for Boys," Robert Baden-Powell employs a pioneering narrative style that intertwines practical instruction with adventurous storytelling, pioneering the youth movement known as scouting. The book serves as both a field manual and an inspirational guide, advocating for outdoor skills, self-reliance, and moral development among young boys. Illustrated with tales of camaraderie and resilience, it reflects the early 20th-century ethos of fostering individual character through nature and shared experiences, rooted in the ideals of Victorian masculinity and patriotic duty. Baden-Powell, a decorated British Army officer, drew on his extensive military experiences and a passion for the outdoors to pen this seminal work. His background in scouting during the Second Boer War, where he utilized training methods to unite troops and local communities, profoundly influenced his vision for youth development. The establishment of the Boy Scouts movement that followed the book's publication highlights his commitment to instilling leadership and adventure in boys across the globe. "Scouting for Boys" is an essential read for educators, parents, and anyone intrigued by youth culture and outdoor education. Its principles remain relevant today, resonating with modern ideals of teamwork, resilience, and exploration. This rich text invites readers to rediscover the timeless values of service and self-discovery, echoing through generations.

South Asian American men are not usually depicted as ideal American men. They struggle against popular representations as either threatening terrorists or geeky, effeminate computer geniuses. To combat such stereotypes, some use sports as a means of performing a distinctly American masculinity. Desi Hoop Dreams focuses on South Asian-only basketball leagues common in most major U.S. and Canadian cities, to show that basketball, for these South Asian American players is not simply a whimsical hobby, but a means to navigate and express their identities in 21st century America. The participation of young men in basketball is one platform among many for performing South Asian American identity. South Asian-only leagues and tournaments become spaces in which to negotiate the relationships between masculinity, race, and nation. When faced with stereotypes that portray them as effeminate, players perform sporting feats on the court to represent themselves as athletic. And though they draw on black cultural styles, they carefully set themselves off from African American players, who are deemed “too aggressive.” Accordingly, the same categories of their own marginalization—masculinity, race, class, and sexuality—are those through which South Asian American men exclude women, queer masculinities, and working-class masculinities, along with other racialized masculinities, in their effort to lay claim to cultural citizenship. One of the first works on masculinity formation and sport participation in South Asian American communities, Desi Hoop Dreams focuses on an American popular sport to analyze the dilemma of belonging within South Asian America in particular and in the U.S. in general.

"It didn''t occur to me until fairly late in the work that I was writing a book about the beginnings of a national celebrity culture. By 1860, a few boxers had become heroes to working-class men, and big fights drew considerable newspaper coverage, most of it quite negative since the whole enterprise was illegal. But a generation later, toward the end of the century, the great John L. Sullivan of Boston had become the nation''s first true sports celebrity, an American icon. The likes of poet Vachel Lindsay and novelist Theodore Dreiser lionized him—Dreiser called him ''a sort of prize fighting J. P. Morgan''—and Ernest Thompson Seton, founder of the Boy Scouts, noted approvingly that he never met a lad who would not rather be Sullivan than Leo Tolstoy."—from the AfterwordPraise for the first edition—"Gorn is an adventurous historian with a talent for informed speculation. He has written an exciting narrative history of boxing and then gone a step further to ask a series of questions that extend his focus to the whole of nineteenth-century American culture."—The Nation"Gorn combines colorful, witty, powerful narrative with enormously sophisticated analytical rigor, and the result is a book that anyone remotely interested in America''s nineteenth century should read."—Virginia Quarterly Review"Gorn''s finely conceived and craftsmanlike book catches the spirit of a young nation rushing to industrialization and how prize fighting was affected by, and came to reflect, much of the national mood and character. The Manly Art is first-rate social history rendered in felicitous prose."—Chicago Sun-Times"The Manly Art is an important contribution to the study of nineteenth-century American culture. Writing with clarity, vigor, and grace, Gorn combines detailed narrative with convincing interpretations. He offers the reader a judicious selection of quotations from the sporting press that capture the drama, sensuality, and brutality of the ring and its craftsmen."—The Journal of American HistoryElliott J. Gorn''s The Manly Art tells the story of boxing''s origins and the sport''s place in American culture. When first published in 1986, the book helped shape the ways historians write about American sport and culture, expanding scholarly boundaries by exploring masculinity as an historical subject and by suggesting that social categories like gender, class, and ethnicity can be understood only in relation to each other. This updated edition of Gorn''s highly influential history of the early prize rings features a new afterword, the author''s meditation on the ways in which studies of sport, gender, and popular culture have changed in the quarter century since the book was first published. An up-to-date bibliography ensures that The Manly Art will remain a vital resource for a new generation.

Now in paperback, a “smart, insightful, funny, moving” (Shea Serrano) exploration of golf, an often-misunderstood game, and the valuable roles it can play in our lives Golf saved Drew Millard’s life, and he wants it to save yours, too. Drew Millard loves golf. We’re talking climbing-a-mountain, jumping-over-the-moon, standing-outside-golf’s-window-holding-a-boom-box levels of love. As a kid, he’d enjoyed the game, but after college, his clubs had been gathering dust in his parents’ basement. And then a bout with depression led him back home to haul them out of the unfinished storage area under the stairs. It was what the doctor had ordered. In addition to medication and therapy, Drew needed to exercise. Exercise was not something he did. But golf? Sure, why not? As Drew fumbled his way through his first round in years, he discovered that sucking at golf was his new calling, one that helped him find a sense of balance and rhythm—both on the course and in his own mind. Drew’s deep emotional connection to the game inspired him to write this book, and his passion is infectious. Combining great storytelling with fascinating historical tidbits and moving personal insights, he writes about everything from how golf taught him to be a better listener, son, and friend, to how to slow down, appreciate what he has, and keep fighting the good fight. Along the way, he demystifies the customs, history, and rules of the game. Brimming with personality, accessibility, and a freewheeling spirit, How Golf Can Save Your Life is a celebration of the sport and an examination of all it offers. Read it and fall in love with golf—for the first time or all over again.
