This book stems from a compilation of two separate research projects. The first was A Long Essay entitled Meaning of the Names of People in Mbo, Department of Linguistics, University of Buea and the other was an Essay entitled Time in Lekongho. The authors succinctly presented Nkongho- Mbo traditional names, their meaning and socio-cultural implications in the Nkongho-Mbo Speech Community. Most importantly, the researchers examined the impact of the Nkongho- Mbo names to the bearers. They explored the positivity and negativity of the selected Nkongho- Mbo names, including the meanings portrayed through the Lekongho language. In addition, they demonstrated the wealth and diversity of African languages, cultures and traditions and how they are fast losing their richness and diversity to the domineering influence of European colonialism and modernization which has drastically altered the socio-cultural, socio-economic and political conditions in Africa and given rise to a new generation of Africans who take greater pride in imbibing and promoting Europeans rather than fostering African values. The authors also addressed the Nkongho conception of time and names in a succinct analysis of how the Nkongho-Mbo people conceived, interpret and use them. The concept of time in most African cultures is very elusive, fluid and imprecise but this book has demonstrated that careful research and patient analysis can reduce that elusiveness, fluidity and imprecision. The authors have moved away from that colonial frame of mind and have shown great interest in reviving certain of the African values that have fallen prey to modernization.

This book is a contribution to the land reform that began in Cameroon more than a decade ago. It is based on the results of multidisciplinary research on land tenure, conducted in all cultural areas of the country by the LandCam project, but also by teachers and students. All the work reflects the paradox around the importance of land for Cameroon's communities, for its development strategies, and social peace and stability, which contrasts with the inadequacy of human resources, in quality and quantity, to enlighten the decision-maker on the subtleties of land tenure, and to enable him to make the most appropriate decisions to ensure a peaceful management of space and resources in the country. Land reform is always a delicate exercise, but one that is essential, because the quality of land management strongly determines the maintenance of social peace, the importance of land-based investments, and the food security of the country's inhabitants. While the hesitation to reform is understandable, and can be explained by the fear of arousing or reawakening buried antagonisms, the consequences of perpetual procrastination in this area are much more frightening, and should constitute as many incentives as possible, and to immediate action. Cet ouvrage est une contribution à la réforme foncière, amorcée au Cameroun depuis plus d’une décennie. Il s’appuie les résultats des recherches pluridisciplinaires sur le foncier, conduites dans toutes les aires culturelles du pays par le projet LandCam, mais aussi des enseignants et étudiants. L’ensemble des travaux rend compte du paradoxe autour de l’importance de la terre pour les communautés du Cameroun, pour ses stratégies de développement, et la paix et la stabilité sociales qui contraste avec l’insuffisance des ressources humaines, en qualité et en quantité, pour éclairer le décideur sur les subtilités du foncier, et lui permettre de prendre les décisions les plus aptes à assurer une gestion apaisée de l’espace et des ressources dans le pays. Central to the Jensen Memorial Lectures 2023 is an invitation to take incompleteness seriously in how we imagine, relate to and seek to understand a world in perpetual motion. Despite our instinct for and obsession with completeness, we are constantly reminded that the sooner one recognises and provides for incompleteness and the conviviality it inspires as the normal way of being, the better we are for it. Fluidity, compositeness and the capacity to be present in multiple places and forms simultaneously in whole or in fragments are core characteristics of reality and ontology of incompleteness. How would we frame our curiosities and conversations about processes, relationships and phenomena with an understanding of the universality of incompleteness and mobility? West and Central Africa, for example, are regions where it is commonplace to embrace and celebrate incompleteness in nature, the suprasensory, human beings, human actions, human inventions and human achievements. The lectures indicate how we could draw inspiration in this regard to inform current clamours for decolonisation and the growing ambivalence about rapid advances in digital technologies (artificial intelligence (AI) in particular), as well as with twenty-first century concerns about migrants and strangers knocking at the doors of opportunities we feel more entitled to as bona fide citizens and insiders. The lectures draw on the writings of Amos Tutuola as well as from popular ideas of personhood and agency in Africa, to make a case for sidestepped and silenced traditions of knowledge. They highlight Africa’s possibilities, prospects and emergent capacities for being and becoming in tune with the continent’s creativity and imagination. They speak to the nimble-footed flexible-minded frontier African at the crossroads and junctions of myriad encounters, facilitating creative conversations and challenging regressive logics of exclusionary claims and articulation of identities and achievements.
