En une soirée de tempête de l'année 1775, sont réunis autour de l'âtre, à l'auberge du Maypole (« Au Mât de cocagne ») de Chigwell, John Willet, tenancier de l'établissement, et trois de ses amis. Parmi eux, Solomon Daisy, qui raconte à un étranger de passage l'histoire, bien connue du village, du meurtre de Reuben Haredale vingt-deux ans plus tôt, au jour près. Le jardinier et le majordome de Reuben ont disparu après le crime et ont été naturellement suspectés ; plus tard, un corps a été découvert au fond d'une fosse dans un état tel que seuls ses vêtements et ses bijoux ont permis de l'identifier comme celui du majordome. Après une arrestation pour un vol qu'il n'a pas commis, Oliver se retrouve chez M. Brownlow qui le traite comme un fils. Mais la bande de jeunes voleurs le retrouve et le force à participer à un cambriolage qui se termine par un échec et une blessure d'Oliver. Heureusement, la famille Maylie le prend en pitié et s'occupe de lui.
