L.P. Hartley Leslie Poles Hartley naît le 30 décembre 1895 à Whittlesey, dans le Cambridgeshire. Diplômé de l'université d'Oxford en 1922, il écrit des critiques pour des revues littéraires et publie des nouvelles à la fois fantastiques et macabres. Après plusieurs recueils de nouvelles – Night Fears and Other Supernatural Tales (1924), Aventure à Venise (1925 ; éditions de La Table ronde, coll. " La Palatine ", 1955) ou encore The Killing Bottle (1932) –, Hartley publie son premier roman en 1944, Eustache et Hilda, vol. 1, La Crevette et l'Anémone (1944 ; éditions J. Losfeld, 2000), le premier volet d'une trilogie sur un frère et une sœur. <br /> Fasciné par l'enfance, Hartley focalise Le Messager (1953 ; éditions Amiot-Dumont, 1955) sur un garçon de douze ans qui, par inadvertance, provoque une tragédie lors d'un été brûlant dans le Norfolk. Un texte aujourd'hui culte en Angleterre, dans lequel Ian McEwan aurait d'ailleurs puisé son inspiration pour l'écriture d' Expiation. En 1957, Hartley publie le thriller The Hireling, qui sera porté à l'écran par Alan Bridges en 1973 (Palme d'or du festival de Cannes 1973). Il explore une nouvelle fois les relations entre frères et sœurs dans My Sisters' Keeper (1970) et livre un roman ambitieux sur les tribulations d'un écrivain pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale avec The Boat en 1949. <br /> Leslie Poles Hartley meurt à Londres le 13 décembre 1972. <br />
